Bull City Teaching Scholarship Application
Eligibility
Applicants must meet the following eligibility criteria to be considered for the Bull City Teaching Scholarship Award:

Be accepted to enroll at North Carolina Central University’s (NCCU) School of Education
-
Be one of the following:
-
A Durham Public Schools senior
-
A former DPS student applying to transfer from Durham Technical Community College (DTCC) to NCCU’s School of Education
-
Minimum Academic Requirements
-
DPS high school applicants or applicants with fewer than 24 hours of college credit must have a minimum high school GPA of 2.7. While not required, we strongly encourage applicants to submit an SAT and/or ACT score.

Applicants with more than 24 hours of DTCC college credit must have a minimum of a 2.7 cumulative GPA. Have not previously been licensed as a teacher.

Applicant must take and pass the Praxis Core from DTCC before entering NCCU if on a 2 year track from DTCC

Applicant must work for DPS for a minimum of four consecutive years
Bull City Teaching Scholar Awards
Forgivable loans may be awarded for use NCCU for
-
DPS seniors: up to 4 years
-
DPS graduates attending DTCC for Associate in Arts of Teacher Prep or Associate in Sciences in Teacher Prep (student must graduate in two years)
Award amounts: up to $6000 per semester (12,000 per year). Loan funds may be used to cover the cost of tuition, fees, and books.
Bull City Teaching Scholars will be required to sign a promissory note agreeing to the terms of their forgivable loans.
Awards are renewable annually for Bull City Teaching Scholars who continue to meet eligibility requirements.
Continuing Eligibility Requirements
After initial acceptance into the program, in order to remain eligible for continued program support, Bull City Teaching Scholars must:

Meet the initial eligibility requirements of the program

Honor the terms of the award promissory note
-
Maintain a G.P.A of a 2.7 or higher at NCCU
-
Participate in all enrichment activities NCCU has for all students on scholarship in The School of Education
-
Do not exceed the maximum number of semesters eligible for the Bull City Teaching Scholar as outlined in his/her acceptance letter.
Forgivable Loans
Bull City Teaching Scholars awards are forgivable loans
-
Bull City Teaching Scholars may receive up to $6,000 per semester ($12,000 yearly) and funds may be used to cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and expenses related to obtaining licensure.

Awards are renewable annually for scholars who continue to meet eligibility requirements
-
Scholars will be required to sign a promissory note agreeing to the terms of their forgivable loans.

One academic year’s loan will be forgiven for:
-
1 year of employment in DPS
-
Example: If a scholar received a 4-year Bull City Teaching Scholarship, the scholar’s loan will be forgiven if he/she works in DPS for 4 years.
Cash Repayment
Loans not forgiven through employment in a qualified position must be repaid in cash to Durham Public Schools.
Forgivable loans will carry an interest rate of 8%.
Interest will begin to accrue and cash repayment will be required in the form of monthly installments commencing no later than

1st day of September after completion of NCCU

90 days after withdrawal from NCCU,
-
30 days after resigning from DPS before the promissory note has been fulfilled.
