Beginning Band
Steven Kosch - 6th & 7th Grade Offerings
Beginning Band is a yearlong course that focuses on learning how to read music and play an instrument. Prior musical experience is not required. Students will be able to choose from Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone, and Percussion. In their second year of playing, students will have even more instruments to choose from! As a part of the band program, students will have the opportunity to perform concerts, play solos, participate in jazz band, and go on field trips.

Steven Kosch - 7th & 8th Grade Offerings
Intermediate Band is available for any student with at least one year of band experience. This course focuses on developing instrumental skills even further, expanding student opportunities for performance and travel. 7th Grade band students have the opportunity to join the Brogden Jazz Band, audition for county and region honors bands, and compete in solo and small ensemble contests. Students will also have the opportunity to learn a secondary instrument such as Tuba, Euphonium, French Horn, Saxophone, and Bass Clarinet.
Advanced Band
Steven Kosch - 8th Grade Offering
Advanced Band is available for 8th graders with at least two years of band experience. Advanced Band students continue to develop skills in preparation for high school band. Students focus on developing self-discipline, confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills. As the top ensemble at Brogden Middle School, the standards are very high as we represent our school in contests, festivals, competitions, and auditions.
Orchestra
Timothy Jackson - 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Offerings
Orchestra is a yearlong course that does not require previous musical experience. Students will learn to read, write, and play music on the violin, viola, cello or bass. 6th Grade Orchestra students will learn to play from the beginner level, performing with the 7th and 8th Grade orchestra students by year’s end. All students will be able to perform in the All-County Orchestra and will be prepared to participate in the Orchestra when they transition to high school.
Chorus

Visual Arts
Tyson Watson - 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Offerings
Brogden’s Visual Arts course welcomes students of any skill or experience level. Our units are based on exploring different mediums including drawing, watercolor, acrylic, sculpture, and printmaking. Students will learn to make art in a variety of ways and also develop skills to analyze and discuss artworks across history.
Physical Education (P.E.) & Health
Kenneth Broadway & Candise Bright - 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Requirement
Students will be exposed to a total education of their physical, mental, social, and nutritional well-being. This will be achieved through a combination of Physical Education and Health Education classes throughout the entire semester. This course will expose students to a total education of their physical, mental, social, and emotional health and wellness.
Physical Education focuses on instilling lessons of cooperation, participation, and good sportsmanship alongside fitness and movement skills. Students will learn the basic rules and concepts needed to participate in various teams and lifetime sports as well as work towards personal fitness goals.
The purpose of Health Education is to provide students with accurate health and wellness information and to empower them to use these practices in their daily lives and futures. Students will engage in the following content: mental health, nutrition, alcohol and drugs, safety, and relationships.
Students are required to dress out daily for physical education classes. Tennis shoes are required to participate.
Middle School Spanish
Taylor Holthouse - 6th, 7th and 8th Grade Offerings
This course introduces basic vocabulary and simple language structures on the novice low level of exit language proficiency to communicate on a variety of familiar topics relating to home and school. Students develop an appreciation for how languages and cultures work by comparing the target language and culture(s) to their own.
Spanish I
Taylor Holthouse - 8th Grade Offering
Students continue to develop the four skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, using increasingly complex structures. Emphasis is placed on interpersonal communication and proficiency. Students also continue exploring the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Students who pass this course may receive a Spanish 1 high school credit, pending the results of the final exam.
Career Exploration - STEM
Shamari Pratt - 6th, 7th & 8th Grade Offerings
In this class, you will design, create, investigate, research, build, analyze, and more! We will dive into modules about various STEM career fields and applications (sustainability, design, engineering, coding, health, and others). We will investigate questions about chemistry and cooking, learn to use 3D modeling software and 3D printers, discover the engineering design process as we build prototypes, learn how we can have a positive impact on the environment, and consider how STEM impacts our lives.
Exploring Technology/Technological Systems

Ashley Eason - 6th Grade Offering
In this course, students experience an orientation to self-awareness and the world-of-work. Emphasis is placed on self-awareness and how interests, attitudes, values, learning styles, skills, and personality influence career choices. Based on the National Career Development Guidelines, skills reinforced include, but are not limited to communications, personal management, and teamwork.
Exploring Careers & Employment
Ashley Eason - 7th Grade Offering
In this course, students will be introduced to career planning and future employment success. The focus is on understanding the job market, acquiring essential skills for employment success, and navigating the career planning and preparation process. Following the National Career Development Guidelines, the course reinforces skills such as communication, personal management, and teamwork, among others.
Fundamentals of Biotechnology

In this course, students are introduced to common terminology and mathematical concepts used in the
biotechnology industry. An emphasis on laboratory safety and infection control will help students understand methods used for protecting the safety of biotech workers and the public. Through the use of scientific inquiry and problem solving, students will investigate cellular design and DNA.
