  • Worked-based learning is an integral part of the CTE experience.

    CTE exposes students to industry professionals and work experiences that help them see how classroom instruction connects to the world of work. Through these experiences and rigorous academics, students graduate “future ready” – that is, armed with the knowledge and personal, professional and technical skills employers require.

    During their time at Durham Public Schools, CTE students are provided the work-based learning opportunities below and additional ones offered by their school. Students may log into their Xello accounts to learn more about these activities and sign up.

    Career Experience 

    Internships, both paid and unpaid, allow students to observe and participate in daily operations, learn about work culture and specific careers, and make workplace contacts that can support their college and career journey for years.

    Here are some of the internship and employment opportunities available to CTE students.

    Oppti

    High school students may search for jobs and internships on our Oppti platform after creating a quick account.

    Courses with Internships

    Some CTE courses require work-based learning, while the CTE Internship course comprises an actual work experience. Ask your career development coordinator or special populations coordinator about internships available at your school.

    Scholars-At-Work Program

    Scholars-At-Work offers a multi-day workplace immersion experience for high school students enrolled at participating schools. Participants spend part of spring break or summer in residence at a local company.
     

    Rising Stars Internship Program

    The Rising Stars Internship Program is a paid summer internship opportunity for DPS rising Juniors and Seniors.  Participants can earn a course credit by completing all components of the program.

    Durham YouthWork Internship Program

    Administered by the City of Durham Office of Economic & Workforce Development, this program places Durham youth ages 14-24 in 6-8-week paid summer internships in businesses, government agencies, educational institutions and nonprofits across Durham.

    City of Durham Parks & Recreation

    Dozens of young people work each summer in a variety of recreation jobs. Look for “Parks & Recreation" positions on the City's job website.

    Lifeguarding with City of Durham Parks & Recreation

    The City’s Parks & Recreation Department also offers seasonal lifeguarding positions for teens ages 16-19, with American Red Cross Lifeguard Training courses offered throughout the year for youth ages 15 and up.

    Durham Bulls

    The Durham Bulls hires young people age 16 and older for seasonal, part-time positions at home games April-August in game entertainment, sports turf, retail, stadium operations, seating bowl hosting, picnic area hosting and ticket operations.

    DPS’s educational farm offers unpaid summer internships in agriculture, media and marketing, as well as after-school and summer-camp programming in land stewardship, business development/sales and animal husbandry.
