Mangum's History
A rural school setting bordered by homes and respected community establishments. Read to find out about our heritage.Bahama, North Carolina draws its name from three families who helped establish the community- the Ball's, the Harris' and the Mangum's. Mangum School, was established as an educational setting in 1939 to educate young people.
This picturesque community is in northern Durham County near Lake Michie and Quail Roost Conference Center. The community and school have a long history and great partnership. The school is named in honor and memory of Willie Person Mangum, a native of the Bahama area. Mr. Mangum served for seventeen years as a member of the United States Senate and for three years as its president.
Mangum Elementary School serves a large attendance area running from the Orange County line in the west to Granville County in the east. The northern boundary is Person County. Mangum's attendance area covers over 70 square miles.
Mangum operated with grades one through twelve for a number of years. In 1979, Mangum became a Primary Center with kindergarten and first grade students. In 1983, with an additional building and renovations to the old building, Mangum added second graders. The school was then named Mangum Primary School. In 1997, Mangum became a K-3 school. By the 2001 school year, Mangum was a K-5 setting. We began the 2006-2007 school year with approximately 380 K-5 students. In 2009 the school opened its new hall housing the arts, media and upper grades. The front entrance was also reworked to incorporate stone from the original school site. In 2021, Mangum added preK and serves for 3 and 4 year olds.
Mangum Elementary School is proud to be located in the heart of Bahama, North Carolina. We feel extremely fortunate to have the continued support of the parents and the community. We are proud of the partnerships and relationships developed. We recognize that to continue our forward journey, we need involvement from the community, commitment from parents, and dedication from our staff. What a gift this is for our students!
