    What is "AIG"?

    Rogers-Herr's AIG program offers challenge and enrichment for students who are ready to go beyond the standard curriculum.

    Students are identified for AIG services through a screening process that takes place at the beginning of 6th grade. Students who were previously identified as AIG in elementary school will continue to qualify. Students may qualify in Language Arts, Math, or both.

    Students who are not identified as AIG may still be placed in Honors Math or Honors English Language Arts classes based on teacher recommendation.

    Instruction in honors classes is accelerated and involves more questioning, problem-solving, and collaboration.

    The Department of Advanced Academics within DPS has a mission to discover, nurture, and develop the potential of every student through designing, guiding, and promoting rigorous programs that challenge and develop the gifts in all learners.

    DPS's plan supports North Carolina Program Standards for AIG, which have been developed by the NC Department of Public Instruction.

    Early in the school year, all 6th graders take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). The CogAT measures reasoning abilities in verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative areas.

    We use the results of these tests to ensure that all children who should qualify are receiving Academically/Intellectually Gifted (AIG) services. The results of these tests also help teachers make more informed decisions about instructional practices for all children.

    The CogAT requires no special preparation and will not affect your child's grades.

    Academic Clubs & Competitions

    Many of our students (whether classified as "AIG" or not) enjoy stretching their minds and exploring their interests in academic competitions and special-interest clubs, including our own chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. Please visit our Extracurricular page to learn more.
